They perform live up and down California regularly, but no show is more special for Zion-I than their own curated Hella Fresh Fest, formally Paid in Full. The party was at the DNA Lounge this year with 2 rooms and stages of performers. The intimate venue really allowed for fans to meet and mix it up with several of the artists. Main stage acts were CunninLynguists, Tribal Seeds and Zion-I. It was a crazy mix of hip hop, reggae and dub step. Salute to Zion-I for capping off another successful year with such a great performance and festival.

After Rock the Bells cancelled on me, my hip hop buddy Brian and I had to make the most of a trip out to New York. Closest show we found that caught our interest was a rave event with RJD2 and Zeds Dead. I’m very selective with my electronic music and have a few DJs and producers that I enjoy and would want to see live. RJD2 is one of those DJs who rides the fence well and is able to bridge the gap between so many genres of music including hip hop, dance, jazz, soul and so many others. He’s one of only a few pioneers in the music industry. It was so much fun and a real pleasure to finally see him perform live. He rocked that shit with 4 turntable decks and a live drummer! Zeds Dead headlined. They were cool and had the crowd dancing and jumping, but in my eyes did not compare to the work and performance that RJD2 put in.
In addition to the concert we had a kick ass trip. I went to a real NY comedy show, Central Park, and had THE Pastrami at Katz’s Deli, ran into a bay area comic buddy out on Long Island and went to Coney Island and had a Nathan’s Famous dog. Most importantly I got to spend some time with my east coast family who I rarely get to see, but love and enjoy every moment with them. I wish we all could see each other more often, and I look forward to seeing some that I missed on my next trip someday.

The 45 Sessions brought in DJ Nu-Mark (Jurassic 5) back to town for a special edition of the 45 Sessions. Usually held in Oakland, the crew crossed over the Bay Bridge and brought the party to the Puma Yard at the America’s Cup Pavilion in San Francisco. The weather was great; music and dance party even better. Congrats to the 45 Sessions DJ Platurn, DJ Enki, and newest member DJ Mr. E on another successful party.

I went out to celebrate the 20 year legacy of the Hieroglyphics out at Hiero Day. Hieroglyphics Imperium teamed up with Oakland-based Linden Street Brewery to present the Second Annual Hiero Day block party on Monday, September 2, 2013. ‘Hiero Day, the free all day music festival that featured live performances by the legendary Hieroglyphics and other special guests, local merchandise vendors, food trucks, and interactive activities for all ages. These are some of the highlights I was able to capture when I wasn’t also podcasting with my SPENT Media team.
’93 Til Infinity will always be known as Souls of Mischief’s biggest and most well known songs and for good reason. Cab Fare isn’t as well known, but it has always been one of my favorites. Cab Fare was only released as a bonus track on a Hiero Oldies compilation, and was rarely ever played or performed at their live shows.
